1. Choosing a tree for the space
The commonest tree mistake in residential Miami is scale — a species chosen for its appearance in a photograph and planted where its mature size cannot fit. Trees are expensive to remove and the conflicts arrive slowly: roots lifting a driveway, canopy in the power line, limbs over a roof.
Check three clearances before choosing: mature canopy spread against the distance to the building; mature height against overhead lines; and root space against paving and services. As a general working rule, keep large shade trees a minimum of fifteen to twenty feet from a structure, and further where the mature spread is genuinely large.

Ficus deserves a specific warning. Several species are widely planted, grow fast, and produce root systems that damage foundations, paving and drainage. In a small residential lot they are a liability, however good they look at ten years old.
2. Planting depth and the root flare
If a tree is planted too deep it may take five years to die, and the cause is almost never identified. The root flare — the point where the trunk widens into the roots — must remain visible after planting and for the life of the tree.
Container-grown trees frequently have soil mounded above the true flare inside the pot. Before planting, scrape the top of the root ball back until the first structural root is found, and plant to that level rather than to the top of the potting mix.
- Dig the hole two to three times the width of the root ball, and no deeper.
- Score or tease apart any circling roots on the outside of the ball.
- Set the tree with the root flare at or slightly above the surrounding grade.
- Backfill with native soil, firmed by hand in layers.
- Water in heavily to eliminate air pockets.
- Mulch three inches deep, in a wide ring, kept four inches clear of the trunk.
- Stake only if genuinely needed, low and loosely, and remove within a year.
Staking is over-used. A trunk that moves in the wind develops taper and strength. Rigid staking produces a tall weak stem that fails when the stake is removed. Stake only where the root ball itself is unstable, and remove it inside twelve months.
3. Establishment watering
Trees need establishment watering for far longer than shrubs, and this is where most young trees are quietly lost. A useful guideline used widely in Florida is roughly three months of regular irrigation per inch of trunk calliper — so a two-inch tree needs about six months of attentive watering, and larger stock longer still.
Water over the root ball specifically, not just the surrounding bed. Until roots grow out, the tree is effectively still in a container, and a root ball can be bone dry in the middle of moist soil.

4. Structural pruning while young
The most valuable pruning a tree receives happens in its first five to seven years, when cuts are small and the structure is still being set. Done well, it prevents most of the failures that later require expensive intervention.
The objectives are simple: establish one dominant central leader rather than competing co-dominant stems; space the permanent scaffold branches out along the trunk rather than clustered at one point; remove branches with narrow, included-bark unions, which are the ones that split; and keep any single branch smaller than about half the trunk diameter.
Co-dominant stems — two trunks of similar size forming a tight V — are the single most common structural failure point in storms. Removing one while it is a small branch is a two-minute job; dealing with it at fifteen years is a crane.
5. Pruning practices to avoid
- Topping. Cutting the crown back to stubs. It produces dense weakly-attached regrowth, decay at every cut, and a tree that is more dangerous in a storm, not less. It is condemned by every arboricultural standard.
- Lion-tailing. Stripping interior branches so foliage sits only at the branch tips. It moves weight to the ends of limbs, removes the interior growth that supports the branch, and dramatically increases breakage.
- Flush cuts. Cutting into the branch collar prevents the tree sealing the wound. Cut just outside the collar.
- Over-pruning palms. Removing green fronds weakens palms and provides no storm protection.
- Wound paint. No longer recommended; it traps moisture and can slow natural sealing.
6. Storm preparation
Preparation is a year-round matter rather than something done when a storm is named. The work that matters is structural pruning done well in advance, ideally in late winter.
Selective thinning — removing some interior branches to let wind pass through the canopy — is genuinely useful when done by someone who understands crown structure. It is not the same as lion-tailing, and the difference matters enormously.
Before a named storm approaches, the useful actions are limited: remove obviously dead or hanging limbs if it can be done safely, move containers and furniture, and otherwise leave the tree alone. Heavy pruning immediately before a storm leaves fresh wounds and a destabilised canopy at the worst possible moment. Our guide to hurricane-resistant planting covers species selection in more depth.
7. Signs of a tree in trouble
- No visible root flare — buried or girdled, both serious.
- Mushrooms or conks at the base — a strong indication of internal decay.
- Cracks in the trunk or a major union — particularly at a co-dominant fork.
- Sudden lean, especially with soil lifting on the opposite side.
- Dieback in the upper canopy, which usually indicates a root problem.
- Sparse or undersized leaves compared with previous seasons.
Any of these on a mature tree near a building warrants assessment by an ISA Certified Arborist. Structural problems in large trees are not a DIY diagnosis, and the consequence of getting it wrong is not a dead plant.
