1. Miami has a dry season, and it is longer than people think
The reputation is tropical downpours. That is roughly May to October. The other half of the year tells a different story.
From November through April, weeks can pass with negligible rainfall. Irrigation restrictions are common. Established plantings that have never been stressed suddenly are, and the species that only just coped through summer start dropping leaves.
Designing for the wet season alone is why so many Miami gardens look tired by March.

2. Genuinely drought-resistant species
Variegated agave. The benchmark. Stores water in its leaves, needs no feeding, and looks deliberate rather than merely surviving. One specimen anchors a bed permanently.
Silver buttonwood. Florida native. The silver foliage is not decorative — the fine hairs reflect light and reduce water loss. Handles drought and salt together.
Cocoplum. Native, hedgeable, exceptional on both drought and salt. One of the most useful plants available for a low-input coastal property.
Saw palmetto. Effectively permanent once established, and requires nothing thereafter. Slow to get going, which is the trade-off.
Blue daze. Low spreading cover that flowers through drought in full sun.
Muhly grass and beach sunflower. Native, tough, and excellent on hot exposed slopes where irrigation does not reach.
Variegated flax lily. Holds form in sun or shade with minimal water.
3. Drought tolerance starts after establishment
This is where drought-resistant plantings fail, and the reason is a misunderstanding rather than a plant problem.
A plant in a nursery container has a root system sized for that container. Until roots grow out into surrounding soil, it cannot reach the water reserves that make it drought tolerant. Planted in May and then left alone because “it is drought resistant,” it dies of thirst — and people conclude the species was oversold.
- Weeks 1–2: water every other day
- Weeks 3–8: twice a week, deeply
- Months 3–6: weekly, tapering off
- After that: rainfall, with supplemental water only in extended dry spells

4. Designing so the whole yard needs less
- Group by water need. Mixing thirsty and drought-tolerant plants on one irrigation zone guarantees one group is always wrong.
- Mulch properly. Three inches, kept clear of stems. It reduces evaporation substantially and moderates soil temperature.
- Reduce turf area. Lawn is the highest-water element in most Miami yards by a wide margin. Converting difficult strips to groundcover removes a recurring problem rather than managing it.
- Water deeply from day one. Shallow frequent watering trains roots to stay near the surface, where soil dries fastest — which produces a plant that is permanently dependent.
- Improve the soil at planting. Organic matter helps sand hold moisture. It compounds over years.
