1. Why mulch matters more here

In a temperate climate mulch is helpful. In Miami-Dade it is doing structural work.

It moderates temperature. Bare sandy soil in full South Florida sun reaches temperatures that damage shallow roots directly. Three inches of mulch keeps the root zone measurably cooler.

It holds water. Through the November-to-April dry season, mulch substantially reduces evaporative loss. That is the difference between irrigating twice a week and three times.

It builds soil. Our sand holds almost no organic matter. Organic mulch decomposing into it improves both nutrient and water retention over years — slowly, but it compounds.

It suppresses weeds at a proper depth, which saves labour indefinitely.

2. Getting the depth right

Three inches is the target. Less than two and weed suppression fails and the moisture benefit drops off sharply.

More than four inches creates its own problems: water can struggle to penetrate to the soil, and in the wet season the layer stays permanently saturated.

Mulch the whole bed rather than a small ring around each plant. It works better, looks considerably more considered, and prevents the soil between plants baking.

Top up annually. Miami heat and rain break organic mulch down faster than in cooler climates — you are usually adding an inch or so rather than replacing the whole depth.

3. The mistake that kills plants

Mulch piled up against a stem or trunk — sometimes called a mulch volcano — holds moisture directly against bark that is not adapted to staying wet.

The result is slow. Bark softens, rots, and the plant declines over months or years with no obvious cause. People frequently replace the plant and repeat the same error with the new one.

Keep mulch three to four inches clear of every stem and trunk. You want to be able to see the root flare where the plant meets the soil. That gap is not optional and it costs nothing.

4. Choosing a type

Shredded hardwood or bark is the standard choice. Breaks down at a reasonable rate, stays where you put it reasonably well, and improves soil as it decomposes.

Pine bark drains freely and lasts longer, which suits beds where you want less frequent topping up.

Melaleuca mulch is worth knowing about locally — it comes from removing an invasive species from Florida wetlands, so using it serves a second purpose.

Rock is not mulch in the functional sense. It does not improve soil and it radiates heat, which stresses plants in full sun. It has a legitimate role in drainage areas and along hard edges, but not in a planting bed.

Avoid cypress mulch where you can — the sourcing has genuine environmental concerns in Florida.

5. A note on landscape fabric

Fabric under mulch defeats the main long-term purpose. Mulch is supposed to decompose into the soil; fabric prevents exactly that.

Worse, within a couple of years organic matter accumulates on top of the fabric and weeds germinate there, rooting through it and becoming considerably harder to remove than they would have been in bare mulch.

Our recommendation: fabric under rock, never under mulch.
