1. What Miami soil actually is
Two distinct problems, often on the same property.
Native ground is sand over limestone. It drains extremely fast, holds almost no nutrients, and the limestone pushes pH up to around 7.5 or higher. At that pH iron and manganese become chemically unavailable — the nutrients are present but the plant cannot take them up. That is why new leaves come in yellow with green veins, covered in our yellow leaves guide.
Newer construction is graded fill. Lots built up during development are frequently compacted subsoil with a thin cap of usable material. Roots cannot penetrate it and water sits on top of it. This is the dominant issue in Homestead, Cutler Bay, Doral and Florida City.

2. Test drainage before you do anything else
Fifteen minutes that saves entire plantings.
- Dig a hole about a foot deep and a foot across where you intend to plant.
- Fill it with water and let it drain completely.
- Fill it again and time how long the second fill takes to drain.
Under two hours: good drainage. Plant normally.
Two to four hours: acceptable for most species. Improve the backfill and avoid anything that resents wet feet.
Over four hours: a real problem. Either plant on a raised mound eight to twelve inches above grade, choose species that tolerate periodic saturation, or use the area for something other than planting.
Standing water kills more plants in Miami-Dade than drought does, and no amount of correct aftercare compensates for it.
3. Amend the backfill, do not replace it
The instinct is to dig a generous hole and fill it with rich bagged soil. In sandy Miami ground that instinct works against you.
A pocket of soft rich mix surrounded by sand creates a bathtub — water collects where the two meet, and roots circle inside the comfortable zone rather than pushing out into the soil they need long term. The plant looks fine for a season and then stalls.
Backfill with the soil you removed, broken up, with a modest amount of compost mixed through if the native material is nearly pure sand. The aim is a gradual transition rather than a sharp boundary.
Water as you fill to collapse air pockets, and firm gently with your hands rather than stamping.
4. Dealing with compacted fill
Where the ground is genuinely compacted, planting into it as-is will fail regardless of everything else.
- Break up a wide area, not just the hole. Roots spread laterally — loosening a two-foot circle around each planting position does more good than digging deeper.
- Never dig deeper than the root ball. A hole dug deep settles, and the plant sinks with it. Set the root ball an inch or two above surrounding grade.
- For a whole bed, consider raising it. Building up six to twelve inches of improved soil over compacted fill is frequently more effective and less work than trying to correct the fill itself.
- Add organic matter across the surface annually. Mulch decomposing in improves the top layer over years.
5. Working with alkaline soil rather than against it
You can lower pH with sulphur. It works, slowly, and it is temporary — with limestone continuously dissolving beneath you are fighting geology.
Two more productive approaches:
Choose adapted species. Florida natives evolved in this soil and rarely show chlorosis. If a plant needs constant iron correction to look acceptable, it may simply be wrong for the site.
Feed with micronutrients included. A slow-release fertiliser containing chelated iron, manganese, zinc and magnesium works with the chemistry rather than trying to change it. Detail in the fertilising guide.
