1. The principle: depth over frequency

Roots grow where water is. Short daily cycles wet only the top couple of inches of sand, so the plant builds a shallow root plate that dries out within hours and cannot support the canopy under stress.

Longer, less frequent cycles push water deeper and pull roots down with it. A plant with roots at eight to twelve inches is dramatically more resilient in a hot dry week than the same plant watered for ten minutes every morning.

The target is to wet the full root zone and then let it dry partially before the next cycle. That partial drying is not neglect — it is what draws air back into the soil and drives root extension.

For planting beds and hedge runs in Miami, drip is clearly better. Our humidity already puts fungal pressure on dense canopies, and spray heads add wet foliage to that. Spray also becomes progressively less effective as shrubs grow, because the plants themselves block the pattern.

Lawn is the exception — turf genuinely needs overhead coverage, which is one of several reasons lawn and beds should never share a zone.

3. Zoning

A zone can only run one schedule, so everything sharing a zone is treated identically. That makes zoning a plant-health decision as much as a plumbing one.

  • Separate lawn from beds. Non-negotiable. Turf wants frequent shallow water; shrubs want the opposite.
  • Separate new planting from established. A new hedge needs daily water while the mature bed beside it needs twice weekly.
  • Separate sun from shade. A shaded bed can need half the water of one in full sun.
  • Separate by water demand. Group drought-tolerant natives together and thirsty tropicals together — this is hydrozoning, and it is the difference between an efficient system and a compromise.

If you only change one thing: put beds and lawn on separate zones. Almost every over-watered shrub bed in Miami is sharing a controller station with turf.

4. How long to run

Run time depends on emitter output, soil and plant size, so treat these as starting points and then verify.

Verify rather than assume. Run a cycle, wait an hour, then dig a small hole beside a plant. Water should have penetrated six to eight inches. If it is damp only at the surface, increase run time rather than frequency. If it is saturated below twelve inches, cut back.

Water early — between about 4am and 8am. Evening watering leaves foliage and soil surface wet overnight, which is the ideal condition for fungal disease in our humidity. Midday watering loses a large fraction to evaporation.

5. Seasonal adjustment

A controller left on one setting all year is the most common irrigation fault in Miami-Dade. It over-waters through the wet season and under-waters through the dry.

At minimum, change it twice: reduce sharply in late April or early May as the rains become reliable, and restore in late October or early November when they stop. Four adjustments across the year is better. A rain sensor — required on new systems in Florida — handles short-term rainfall automatically and is worth fitting to older systems for the same reason.

6. New plantings

Newly installed plants have a root ball surrounded by soil their roots have not reached yet. Until they root out, they are effectively still in a container, and container media dries far faster than the ground around it.

That means water must be applied over the root ball specifically, not just to the bed generally. A drip emitter placed directly on the root ball, or a temporary watering basin, makes the difference. Broadcast irrigation across a bed can leave a new plant dry in the middle of wet soil — a genuinely common failure.

Roughly: daily for two weeks, alternate days for weeks three to six, every third day to week eight, then taper into the normal schedule. Our guide to watering new plants covers the detail.

7. Diagnosing an irrigation problem

Over- and under-watering produce very similar symptoms — wilting, yellowing, poor growth — which is why so many plants get the wrong treatment.

Always check the soil before acting. The single most useful irrigation tool is a long screwdriver — push it into the bed; it slides easily through moist soil and resists dry soil.

8. Rules and restrictions

Landscape irrigation across South Florida is subject to watering-day restrictions administered locally and by the South Florida Water Management District. Permitted days and hours depend on address and can change with drought conditions.

New systems in Florida are required to include a functioning rain sensor or equivalent shut-off device. If your system predates that, retrofitting one is inexpensive and immediately reduces both water use and root problems.

Confirm the current rules for your address before programming a controller — the restrictions are enforced, and they also happen to align well with what the plants actually want.
