1. Why prevention matters more here

In most of the country a hard freeze knocks back insect populations each year. Miami-Dade has no such reset. Scale, mealybug, whitefly, aphid and mite populations carry over continuously, and generations follow each other year-round.

That means small problems compound faster and reactive spraying works less well. The garden that stays clean here is the one that was set up not to have problems, not the one that gets sprayed most often.

2. Healthy plants resist

Almost every serious infestation begins on a stressed plant. Pests locate stressed hosts preferentially — a plant under water stress or nutrient stress emits different volatile signals and has weaker physical defences.

So the first line of pest control is not a product. It is right plant, right place, watered correctly and fed adequately.

  • Match plant to light. A shade plant in full Miami sun is permanently stressed and will be found.
  • Match plant to drainage. Roots in saturated soil cannot function; the canopy above them becomes a target.
  • Correct nutrient deficiencies. Chronic chlorosis from locked-up iron weakens a plant continuously.
  • Do not over-fertilise. Excess nitrogen produces soft, sappy growth that sucking insects prefer — a very common cause of aphid and scale outbreaks.

Over-feeding is a pest strategy. High-nitrogen fertiliser pushes lush soft growth, which is exactly what aphids, mealybugs and scale feed on most readily.

3. Airflow and spacing

Our humidity means that anything which stays wet stays vulnerable. A dense congested shrub whose interior never dries after a storm develops leaf spot, sooty mould and stem rot.

Two practical responses. First, plant at mature spacing rather than the spacing that looks full immediately — congestion in year three is a maintenance and disease problem, not just an aesthetic one. Second, thin the interior of dense shrubs occasionally rather than only shearing the outside, which produces a shell of foliage around a dark damp centre.

4. Watering practice

Three rules cover most of it.

  1. Water at the soil, not over the canopy. Drip rather than spray in beds. Wet foliage overnight is the primary condition for fungal disease.
  2. Water early in the day. Between roughly 4am and 8am, so any foliage that does get wet dries quickly.
  3. Water deeply and infrequently. This produces deeper roots and less overall stress, and it avoids the permanently damp surface layer that fungus gnats and root pathogens favour.

5. Quarantine new plants

Most infestations are imported. A new plant carrying a few scale insects or mealybugs introduces them to a garden that did not have them, and by the time they are visible they have spread.

Before a new plant joins an existing planting: turn several leaves over and look at the undersides and the leaf axils. Check the stem where it meets the soil. Look for sticky residue, black sooty mould, cottony white masses or small brown bumps that do not rub off easily.

If practical, keep new plants separate for two weeks and re-inspect. That is easy for containers and impractical for a hedge run — which is a good reason to buy from a grower who can show you the plants before they are loaded.

6. Monitoring

Weekly, five minutes, with intent. Walk the garden and turn over leaves on two or three plants of each type, concentrating on new growth and leaf undersides where sucking insects congregate.

What you are looking for is early and small: a few insects on one shoot, a little stickiness, slight leaf distortion. At that stage a jet of water or a spot treatment resolves it. Once an infestation is visible from a distance, it has been established for weeks.

That last row matters. Chewing damage in a Florida garden is often a butterfly larva, and spraying it removes exactly the wildlife most people want. Coontie hosts the atala butterfly; senna hosts sulphurs. Some leaf damage is the cost of that, and it is worth paying.

8. Least-toxic controls first

When intervention is needed, escalate slowly. Broad-spectrum insecticides kill ladybirds, lacewings and parasitic wasps along with the target, and those predators are doing a large amount of unseen work. Removing them frequently produces a worse outbreak a few weeks later.

  1. Physical removal. A strong jet of water dislodges aphids, mites and whitefly. Pruning out a badly affected shoot removes the population with it.
  2. Horticultural oil or insecticidal soap. Effective on scale, mealybug and whitefly, low residual impact on beneficials. Requires thorough coverage including leaf undersides, and should not be applied in full midday sun or on drought-stressed plants.
  3. Targeted products for a specific identified pest, applied only to affected plants.
  4. Broad-spectrum insecticide — a last resort, and rarely necessary in a well-set-up garden.
