1. Before anything is dug
Two checks come first. Utilities — in Florida that means calling 811 before excavation, which is free and legally expected. Much of Miami-Dade has shallow irrigation lines, low-voltage lighting and cable runs that do not appear on any plan.
The second is drainage. Dig one test hole in the bed, fill it with water and watch. If it drains within an hour or two, the site is fine. If water is still sitting after four hours, you have a drainage problem, and no plant selection will solve it. In parts of the county the limestone caprock sits close to the surface and holds water in the hole like a bowl.
Drainage is a site condition, not a plant problem. If the test hole holds water, the options are raised beds, improved grading, or plants that genuinely tolerate periodic saturation — not hoping.
2. Setting out on the ground
Plants get laid out in their containers and viewed from where people will actually stand — the patio, the kitchen window, the street — before anything is planted. Paper plans and real sightlines disagree surprisingly often.
For a hedge, a string line is run and the spacing marked physically. Eyeballing a run of thirty plants over sixty feet produces visible drift, and once they are in the ground it is permanent. For beds, plants are positioned at final spacing rather than the spacing that looks full on day one — the most common client request, and the one worth resisting.
3. The hole
The rule is wide and shallow. At least twice the width of the root ball, and no deeper than the root ball itself. In Miami sand, width matters more than depth because lateral roots do the establishing work, and loosened soil to the side is what they grow into.
Where limestone caprock is hit, it usually has to be broken through or the planting position moved. A hole cut into rock with no outlet becomes a sump — the plant sits in standing water after every storm and declines over a season or two.

4. Depth — the decision that matters most
If one thing separates a professional install from an amateur one, it is depth. The root flare — where the trunk widens into the roots — must remain visible after planting. Buried, it holds moisture against bark and the plant declines slowly enough that the cause is rarely identified.
Nursery containers complicate this: soil is often mounded above the true flare in the pot. A good crew scrapes the top of the root ball back to find the first structural root, then plants to that, not to the top of the potting soil.
In sand, setting the root ball an inch proud of grade is the safer error. Settling always happens; sinking a plant is far harder to correct than raising the mulch around it.
5. Backfill and watering in
Backfill with the soil that came out of the hole, lightly improved at most. Filling a hole in sand with rich compost creates a distinct pocket that behaves like a container — water moves into it and stops at the boundary, roots circle inside it rather than venturing out, and in heavy rain it stays saturated. Improving the whole bed is worthwhile; improving one hole is counter-productive.
Firm the backfill by hand in layers rather than stamping it, then water in heavily and immediately. That first watering is not really about moisture — it is about collapsing air pockets so roots meet soil. A plant with air gaps around the root ball dries out unpredictably no matter how carefully it is irrigated afterwards.
6. Mulch and irrigation
Three inches of mulch across the whole bed, pulled three to four inches back from every stem. A shallow watering basin can be formed just outside the root ball on individual specimens to direct water where it is needed for the first few months.
Irrigation should be checked or installed before the crew leaves. On a hedge run, drip line along the row is far more effective than spray heads, which wet foliage and lose most of their output to evaporation in Miami sun. Our irrigation guide covers scheduling in more detail.
7. The first eight weeks
Establishment is when plants are actually lost, and it is almost always a watering pattern issue in one direction or the other.

A useful test at week six: take hold of the stem near the base and pull gently. A plant that has begun rooting out resists; one that moves freely in its hole has not established and needs continued attention. Our guide to watering new plants covers the first eight weeks in detail.
8. What you should expect from a crew
- A layout walk-through before planting begins, with the chance to move things.
- Root flares visible on every plant when they leave.
- Mulch across the bed, not volcanoes around stems.
- Empty containers, spoil and offcuts removed.
- A written watering schedule for the first eight weeks.
- A clear statement of what is and is not covered if a plant fails.
